About Jean

Whether I’m teaching at Harvard Medical School, seeing clients in my private practice, running groups, writing articles or giving lectures, I am dedicated to helping people keep physically, emotionally and mentally fit.

I’m a licensed psychotherapist and a certified hypnotherapist. I have trained in several therapeutic approaches, all of which fall under the umbrella of behavioral medicine or mind-body medicine. Mine is an integrative approach that combines cognitive-behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based psychotherapy, among other schools of therapy.

I have an appointment with the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Through the Behavioral Medicine Program at the Cambridge Health Alliance, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, I teach and supervise professionals and advanced trainees in behavioral medicine.

I got my BA in English Literature from Brandeis University; my MSW from Simmons School for Social Work. I’ve practiced psychotherapy for the last 25 years in a variety of settings, including state prisons, community mental health centers, public hospitals and private practice. Currently, I see clients in person at my Concord, Massachusetts, private practice as well as on-line via Skype.

I’m licensed to practice psychotherapy in Massachusetts as a licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW). I am a member of the National Association of Social Workers and the Multiservice Eating Disorder Association. As a hypnotherapist, I’ve been certified by the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis, the major association for practicing hypnotherapists founded by Milton Erickson.

My writing career predates my clinical practice. A veteran journalist, I have written about food and body-image issues for newspapers (from the Boston Globe to the LA Times), magazines (O: The Oprah Magazine, Shape, Self) and on-line publications (NPR, Huffington Post). Through the ‘80s, I wrote a syndicated fitness column, distributed world-wide by The LA Times Syndicate. The Self-Compassion Diet, the book and the audio companion, is published by Sounds True.
